  1. I have purchased a # of photography books from Amazon but this was by far the most disappointing.

Did not come away with much as the contents were repetitive right through.

    Also purchased:

Creative Night: Digital Photography Tips & Techniques – By Harold Davis

Creative Composition: Digital Photography Tips & Techniques – By Harold Davis

I was hoping that I would have some nice reference materials but was grossly disappointed.

I am not a professional but just an enthusiast and normally do not post reviews good or bad, but just felt I had to for these three books.

Also I am not one for returning stuff…so I guess I am stuck with them.

It is a useful idea book but I was quite disappointed with the technical quality of many photos. I don’t know if it is due to printing, small depth of field, diffraction (which should have been discussed in the book), or the +4 closeup lenses but many photos are quite soft and some have nothing in sharp focus at all. I am not talking about the impressionism photos. I even went back to the 1987 Closeups in Nature by John Shaw to see if his photos are as good as I remember. Shaw’s photos are beautifully composed, tack sharp, interesting and clearly better than most pictures in the present book.

  3. In his book, Harold Davis, not only gives advise the reader on techniques, but he also gives a description of the method used of the pictures in his book, like f stop, shutter speed and ISO. Very important information the reader can apply when crating his photo shots.

This is a wonderful book that anyone who has an interest in delving into the arena of macro photography would be well served in reading. The author goes into detail in each chapter. He discusses the choices available in lenses, extension tubes, filters, use of tripods, exposure requirements, lighting, flash techniques, and focusing. He devotes chapters on flower macro photography, water drops, close-ups in the studio, and in techniques such as HDR, selective focusing, motion, impressionism in macro work, colors and abstractions, etc. A chapter on resources, and other reading, is included.

All of the techniques that the author describes are well illustrated with amazing images. Even if you are not yet doing macro work, they should be looked at. Each image has been annotated with the lens, speed, f-stop, and iso used, and if tripod or hand held.

The book gets 4 stars from this reviewer.
